I've got a VP2500-HP and all of the controls on the PC control screen seem to work. I'm new to PnP and trying to learn it from the manual is not going to work. What an awful, awful manual. If you've looked at it you know what I mean.
Is there a tutorial on how to setup and use a VP2500 that is intended for a newbie?

yes sure there is you have a check list "How to setup my pick and place machine.pdf" in your software instllation and how about the chapter 1.8?
What do you need to improve in this manual? We can do a web meeting next week to do some training.
Bob you need to download the V2 software setup. Download the manual and read the installation instructions. Run setup and copy the machine configuration files from the DVD.
After running the setup all files for a common machine will be installed. We need the Visual C++ runtime and the serial converter drivers. Don’t uses the “program files” path because you receive problems the software can’t write in application directory directory this will be prevented by windows. You need a application directory in root like “C:\SMT\”. Normally the USB to serial converter will be detected without supplying a special driver. If not you should use the driver in the application directory “C:\SMT\Supportfiles\usb_serial_driver”. The same for our digitizer it will be recognized automatically as camera from windows. After finishing setup you should copy the “config.ini”, “config_feed.fig” and “config_camera.fig” from your CD to update your machine calibration files. Now you need to set the Feeder mode again inside each of your feeder lines because this depends on language settings. Look in section 4.3 Feeder Properties Dialog! (Because the settings from you CD depend on Chinese setup)
Imagine that with each machine you send a PCB with room for R1 can C1 along with a half meter each of 1K 0603 and 0.1uF 0603. What would the document look like if you wanted to take a newbie from zero to placing R1 and C1 on the PCB? I think it would cover: - unpacking the machine - powering the machine - software installation - initial validation that all actuators move correctly - initial calibration of the cameras - physically loading the cut tape into the feeders - loading the SMT file(s) - Identifying which feeder has R1, which has C1 - using fiducials to locate the board - using the machine to place R1 and C1 - how to repeat the above process for the next board
I can write this for you but you'll need tell me how to do each of these steps. At the end of this you'll have a nice getting started guide and I'll be placing parts.
We could use the forum for my detailed questions and your replies. I'll put everything on a web page that you can use as the basis for the Users Guide. Later you can remove this thread from the forum.

Hi Bob! Calling the manual "awful" is a bit harsh. But I really struggled with the nomenclature in the software itself and in the manual. I had to practically test a lot of configurations, to find out, what they really mean. For example "Fly Vision" means actually "Skip angle alignment in Vision control". Even if this is too long to print inside the software, one could write it down in the manual. Regards, M.

Michael, you can delete this thread if you want. I don't want to scare off potential customers by my grips about the manual.
There are two big problems with the manual. The first is, as you suggest, the translation. Automated translators will take something like "X offset to camera 1" and convert offset to distance and then "take distance" to be conversationally "take long trip to camera 1". Automated translators are terrible on technical text. The other problem is the lack of a bring-up sequence. The goes back to the "totally lost" part. Software is installed; config files copied from the CD; connected and hardware is responsive; NOW WHAT???
You mentioned "How to setup my pick and place machine.pdf" in a previous post. A one page text document with only six steps for using the hardware? Seriously? Step 16 is "Move the top camera to the feeder pick up position and adjust the center. Take over the position inside the feeder dialog using the CX and CY button". Dude, come on! A newbie is not going to have a fucking clue what any of that means! You ought to delete that document. The title promises hope but the content delivers zero help.
This thread has no useful information so maybe it should be deleted. I'll start asking specific questions in a new thread.
